Does it Snow in Munnar?
Snow in South India?
Sounds impossible, isn’t it?
With the weather quite different from what one experiences in the Himalayas, people often feel that Munnar’s glory is limited to its greenery and plantations. However, Munnar is one of those rare places that subvert our expectations and promise a beautiful atmosphere on some days. So, does it snow in Munnar? The answer is yes; it does. When winter has arrived in its full force, Munnar turns into one of the coldest regions of South India.

So, how does it happen, and what kind of gorgeous vistas can you experience? This blog takes you through the rolling hills of Munnar and the crispness of the surroundings. It’s less of an overview and more of a wholesome experience.
How Does it Snow in Munnar?
Yes, it does snow in Munnar. In fact, on Christmas 2024, it snowed in Munnar and the Kerala hill station dropped below 0 degrees in the Chenduvarai Estate, Lakshmi Estate, and Thenmala. The leaves got crisper, and the grasslands turned into a snow paradise. Isn’t that why Munnar is lovingly called the Kashmir of South India?

Munnar is at an elevation of 1600 m and experiences pleasant weather throughout the year. However, as December ends and the new year begins, the lands get covered in snow. Places like Pampadum Shola, Kannimala, Devikulam, Periyavarai, and Lakkad begin welcoming the white sheets of snow and a mist in the air. Therefore, the hill station is often packed with travellers during these months.
