Neriamangalam Bridge, a gateway to Munnar (heaven), is what acts as a link between the Idukki and Ernakulam districts.\u00a0 The bridge was constructed in 1928 during the rule of Sethu Lakshmi Bayi and it has been 97 years. It was the first Class A Arch bridge and opened to the public in 2935 by Travancore’s King, Chithira Thirunal<\/a>. Also known as Sethulekshmi Bridge, its primary aim was to build a route between Aluva and Munnar. What\u2019s magical about this bridge is that it has stood firm against wear and tear, and still holds strong without much repair or maintenance.<\/p>\n

What is the History of Neriamangalam Bridge?<\/h3>\n

Till 1924, a road used to connect Kochi and Munnar and was the only travel mode for people. However, due to excessive rain, the road got destroyed and people couldn\u2019t cross the two districts. Movement got restricted, trades halted, and an action had to be taken. That\u2019s when Lakshmi Bayi ordered the construction of a bridge over the Periyar River.<\/p>\n

The Neriamangalam Bridge was inaugurated in 1931; however, it became accessible for people in 1935. The bridge was built using granite and surkhi, a reason that it has survived natural calamities, including the 1961 and 2018 floods. It stands firm on six pillars, out of which only four are visible to the crowd. There are five arches on top, and this suspension is built uniquely. When a heavy vehicle crosses over, its weight is lifted on the arches.<\/p>\n
